When you’re thinking about remodeling, it’s easy to fall down on a rabbit hole of Pinterest boards, imagining how fantastic your house will look. However, the path to a finished dream home is paved with dust, decisions, and disorder.

Before taking the plunge, it’s good to know what you’re getting yourself into. Here are a few things to expect when taking on a whole house remodeling project.

Myriad of Choices

Herein lies the most exciting (but sometimes frustrating) part about a remodel: you get to determine what you want and what you don’t want. While this can be exhilarating for some, it can also feel exhausting as it doesn’t end with the drafting and design phase.

During your kitchen or bathroom remodel, you may find yourself making difficult choices about the future of your home. Our crews will help in limiting the number of times this may happen, but some things inevitably occur. We recommend discussing your options with family members to help you make the best decision for your home.

Everything Comes in Stages

From the first designs and plans to the demolition to the final drywall, there are many steps to a remodel—and they all feel like they take a very long time. They also all come with their own challenges.

During the design phase, you may become frustrated as you work with your general contractor to figure out what’s possible, what’s in your budget, and what will be required.

Let’s say you’re doing a major kitchen remodel. A lot of people you’ve never met will suddenly be in your home, taking things apart and generally working on what looks like a mess, but is actually progress! Then there’s framing, drywall, wiring, plumbing, and electrical work. Every step may feel like it should be the last, which can be tiresome and stressful.

Eventually, though, you’ll begin to see your new space taking shape—and that’s when you know it’s been worth it.

Loud Noise

What-to-Expect-When-Youre-Remodeling1-300x200

If you’re doing a huge renovation (i.e. getting room additions), expect that there’s going to be continuous, disturbing noise. From thumping nail guns, whining saws, to bellowing compressors, you cannot expect peace when the renovation is ongoing. Those who are working at home may find their daily routine affected by this, so make the necessary arrangements before beginning any whole house remodeling project.

Mess Will be Everywhere

Home remodels are a clean freak’s worst nightmare. Everything will be covered in dirt and dust, even if your contractor is conscientious.  In fact, setting up tarps and covering floors will not be enough to keep your place clean. Microscopic particles can become airborne and reach every item in your home.

One thing you can do to lessen the dirt is by storing clothing in sealed plastic containers away from the work area. Be prepared to wipe down everything when construction is done, including slats of blinds, walls, underneath tabletops, and other places where you think dirt cannot reach.

Funding Concerns

Your project may be on a budget, but the sheer amount of money you will be spending may surprise you. Are you used to writing four-digit checks? A large remodel may require you to add one or two more zeros. Change orders and increasing costs may cause a bit of a freakout—to minimize your anxiety, consider having cash on hand for contingencies.
